Governor expands school armed guards after Nashville shooting.
After the Nashville private Christian school massacre, Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee stated he would add school resource officers to all schools.
The governor's plan follows a 28-year-old transgender person's Covenant School shooting that killed six people, including three children. Police killed the suspect.
Lee discussed the shooting's emotional toll.
"We understand fear, anger, and rage. As do we all, "Lee told Tennessean. "I have an obligation to do all I can and engage with leaders across this community to address people's concerns and protect our kids in any way we can."
The governor's plan would expand a proposal to deploy an armed guard, or school resource officer, at every Tennessee public school and provide state cash for private schools to employ one.
This state legislature-approved proposal would require private schools to hire guards with the same training as public schools. The programme is optional for private schools.
Lee issued a similar executive order last year and promoted a new school safety strategy in his top of the state address this year. The proposed proposal penalises public schools with security infractions.
This year's governor's budget included $20 million for school security measures. He wants to increase private school funding to this fund.
